GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The longest-tenured TV weather forecaster in Nebraska is applying his trademark positivity to a fight against cancer.

News Channel Nebraska Chief Forecaster Kent Boughton announced his cancer diagnosis in a social media video on Friday. Boughton has stage four small-cell carcinoma.

His first symptom was losing his voice. That led to the discovery of a tumor in his lung that had grown against his left vocal cord and paralyzed it.

“If that didn’t happen, I wouldn’t have known I had cancer,” Boughton said in the video.

In his video, Boughton thanked Nebraska viewers for supporting him for more than 50 years.

“I don’t need anything from any of you except your prayers," Boughton said. "I do ask for that and I appreciate every single one.”

Boughton said he plans to continue forecasting for as long as he can.

“Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives," Boughton said. "I will continue to be here for that.”

Boughton is a member of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. He broadcasts from News Channel Nebraska’s Grand Island office.
