Fairbury reports seven inches of snow since Saturday in first major storm of the season

Totals from the first major snowfall of the season in this part of the country have begun to be tabulated - and the Southeast part of Nebraska had to withstand more than half a foot of snow, plus severe winds, over the last few days.

After the last few days, it’s safe to say winter has arrived in Southeast Nebraska.
This part of the state was hit fairly hard by the first snowfall of the season over the last couple of days - Fairbury reported three inches of snowfall Saturday morning and then another four inches throughout the morning on Monday.

Snow was coming down consistently even before 6 AM today, with plenty of people, including business owners and volunteers, out plowing the streets around the courthouse and downtown Fairbury around that time, trying to get things ready for the start of the post-holiday week.

Combined with significant, persistent winds, that early morning precipitation made travel difficult in all directions, and prompted just about every school in this part of the state to close down for the day Monday. Freeman in Adams was the only exception - they elected to operate with a two hour delay. As of Monday evening, all schools are on as scheduled for Tuesday.

A winter weather advisory was initially in effect until 6 PM Monday, but it was lifted by noon - by that point, the snow from the first major storm of the season had all but stopped.
