BEATRICE, Neb. - A Kansas man is behind bars after a woman reported being strangled multiple times.

Gage County Sheriff's Deputies were called to the Diamond-T Truck Stop on U.S. Highway 77 north of Beatrice around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday for an assault that allegedly occurred earlier in the day.

According to the sheriff’s office, 47-year-old Hollie Carver of Hutchinson, KS. said her boyfriend, 31-year-old Justis Barnhouse, strangled her "five to six times" throughout the afternoon.

Carver also reported Barnhouse took her phone to prevent her from contacting law enforcement. She also said Barnhouse would not allow her to leave the camper for the past two days, when she attempted to return home.

The sheriff’s office said the pair later went to Walmart in Beatrice, where Carver was able to alert an employee.

She asked the worker to follow her to the restroom and then provided information about the alleged assaults. The employee contacted authorities.

Barnhouse was at the truck stop when deputies arrived and was taken into custody.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault by strangulation and third-degree domestic assault with two prior convictions.

He was booked into the Gage County Detention Center.
