WILBER, Neb - A Southeast Nebraska tradition of celebrating Czech culture kicked off on Wednesday night.

The town of Wilber, known by many as the “Czech Capital of the USA” Began their Wilber Czech festival with Polkas in the Park, a celebration of Czech songs and dances. Jeremy Kohout is a member of the alumni band performing.

“Why not kick it off on Wednesday night, give the campers a taste of Czech days a day early!” Kohout said.

The event took place in Wilber’s legion park and RV camp area, as campers and those from the area showed up in golf carts, some in typical Czech garb. Jen Pospisil says a large crowd like the one on Wednesday night is a reason for such a successful Czech Days each year.

“It gives me goosebumps every year when the band starts playing,” PospisIl said. “It’s amazing to see all these people here on a Wednesday night, who share that passion with their friends and family, sharing the Czech culture and tradition together.”

As for why Polkas in the Park is a good way to start the event, Kohout says it comes down to passion for Czech culture.

“Our whole mission is promote and preserve Czech heritage and music,” Kohout said. “What better reason o get everybody out here to play some Polka music?”
