McCool Junction's season ends in state quarterfinals

LINCOLN, NE — The McCool Junction Mustangs made their first trip to the girls state basketball tournament in two decades on Thursday. Unfortunately, this trip only lasted one game.
The Mustangs fell to the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers 61-54 in the quarterfinals of the Class D2 tournament Thursday morning at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
McCool Junction started out hot, scoring 23 points in the first quarter and leading by 10 after eight minutes of play. Humphrey St. Francis clamped down on defense in the second period and began the period on an 8-0 run. The Flyers climbed all the way back in to tie it at 32 at halftime.
The Flyers continued the momentum into the second half, taking the lead early in the period. They'd hold a 47-41 advantage heading to the fourth.
McCool Junction matched with Humphrey St. Francis in the fourth, but that wasn't enough to make up the ground they'd lost. The Flyers moved onto the semifinals with the 61-54 win.
Isabel Preister led the way with 24 points for Humphrey St. Francis. Emma Baumgart added 19.
Mckenna Yates paced McCool Junction with 20 while Shelby Bandt scored 10.
