BEATRICE – The Beatrice Board of Education has approved an increase in contract for the district’s superintendent. As of next July 1st, Jason Alexander will receive an 8.23-percent increase in base salary and 8.66-percent hike in total compensation.

Alexander, who has been a finalist in recent months for superintendent positions at Kearney and South Sioux City, will see his base salary increase from $177,665, to $192,500.

Board member Janet Byars says the move follows a comparison study of the superintendent’s position with similar schools. Board member Jon Zimmerman says the increase was a long-time coming.

With health insurance coverage and a new monthly cell phone allowance, total compensation in the superintendent contract will come to $239,236.

Current School Board President Eric Trusty says its important for the district to be at least at the mid-point of administrator pay by comparison with other schools. Board member Doris Martin says that same principle should apply for all staff members.

Other districts used in the comparison include Norris, Seward, York, Crete, Blair, Waverly, Grand Island Northwest, Plattsmouth and Schuyler.  In addition to the contract change, the Beatrice School Board approved the recent evaluation of the district superintendent.

The Board was scheduled to approve the guaranteed maximum price for the new prekindergarten to fifth grade facility, but action has been delayed to finalize details on a final bid package and handle some legal matters.
