BRADY, Neb. — The American Red Cross is providing shelter and support services to residents affected by ongoing wildfires across central and western Nebraska.

Red Cross officials said volunteers have been deployed across the region since the middle of last week as several large wildfires, including the historic Morrill Fire in western Nebraska, continue to impact communities.

The Red Cross is currently operating a shelter at the Brady Community Center, located at 121 N. Main St. in Brady. The shelter is open to residents who have been displaced or need a safe place to stay.

Volunteers at the shelter are providing meals, a place to rest and assistance with immediate needs. Red Cross officials said shelters are open to anyone affected by the fires.

In addition to supporting residents, the Red Cross is also assisting firefighters working long shifts on the fire lines.

The organization is partnering with local agencies to support a respite center in North Platte where firefighters can access meals, snacks, showers and a place to rest between assignments.

Red Cross officials said they are continuing to work closely with local emergency management agencies and other partners across impacted areas to monitor conditions and respond to emerging needs as wildfire activity continues.

Several large fires have burned across Nebraska in recent days amid dry conditions and strong winds, forcing evacuations and damaging property in some areas.

Residents affected by the wildfires can request assistance by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The organization also encourages residents to download the free Red Cross Emergency App, which provides weather alerts, safety information and locations of open shelters.
