Thayer Central runs away with win over Sutton

HEBRON, NE — The Thayer Central Titans are off to a 2-0 start to the 2022 football season after a dominant win over the Sutton Mustangs Friday night.

HEBRON, NE — The Thayer Central Titans are off to a 2-0 start to the 2022 football season after a dominant win over the Sutton Mustangs Friday night. 

Thayer Central defeated Sutton 56-14 in a game that featured three pass attempts between the two schools. 

The Titans scored on all five of its possessions in the first half. Meanwhile, Sutton was held to punts on its first three drives, a turnover on downs on its fourth and the fifth finished with the end of the first half. At the break, the Titans led 38-0.

With a running clock the entire second half, Sutton managed to get into the endzone twice in the fourth quarter after Thayer Central removed many of its starters from the game. 

Jordan Mariska led the Titans on the ground with 152 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Sam Souerdyke also surpassed the century-mark, rushing for 118 yards and three scores on 18 carries. 

Thayer Central quarterback Will Heitmann ran and threw for touchdown in the game. He ran for 27 yards on six carries. Heitmann's lone pass in the game was a 47-yard touchdown pass to Grant Wiedel. 

Sutton was led by the 48 rush yards of Gabe Gwennap. Weston Ohrt rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Backup RB Trevin Buescher ran for 44 yards and a score on six carries. 

Thayer Central (2-0) is on the road next week against Heartland. Sutton (0-2) returns home for a contest with Hi-Line.
