LINCOLN, Neb. -- For the second time this year, the Lincoln Children's Zoo welcomed a new baby giraffe born at the zoo. The announcement follows the zoo's first ever giraffe birth in January.

Newly arrived Kay was born to mom Allie and dad Joey in February, the zoo announced this week.

The birth wasn't without challenges, zoo officials said, noting that Allie went into shock and was unable to feed Kay, who then developed a respiratory infection shortly after birth. Officials said the infection needed to be treated with antibiotics.

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo donated plasma from one of its giraffes to help get Kay healthy again.

Both the mother and calf are now healthy, with Kay now four weeks old and over 200 lbs.
