Huskers to reach 400 consecutive sellouts of Memorial Stadium
LINCOLN, NEB. - The date was Nov. 3, 1962. Missouri beat the Huskers 16-7, but the 36,000 fans in attendance were the start of the something special.
That game was sellout number one of 400 straight. This Friday night, Nebraska is set to celebrate that number, and players and coaches alike shared what it means to them, to be part of the special milestone.
“The fans here, I know they say there;’s no better place, but I really believe that,” defensive lineman Ty Robinson said. “When you’re part of it, you don’t know any better because it’s all we know.. But I tel my friends and colleagues back home, we get 66,000 for the spring game. That’s more than any other place I’ve been gets in the season.”
From the Black 41 Flash Reverse pass to Eric Crouch, to the post 9/11 tunnel walk, there’s no shortage of great moments in Memorial Stadium history
Head coach Matt Rhule says he uses the sellout streak as an example when recruiting
“We show them the number of sellouts in a row and then the All-American’s,” Rhule said. “Then we talk about the field and how we hope they win a championship on that field, but also that they graduate on that field. And that shows the University of Nebraska is not just a football factory, but a place of development.”
And for freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola and defensive lineman Ty Robinson, they credit Husker nation for making it to 400.
“It never gets old walking into that stadium when it’s sold out.. I know we’re going to need them extra this game, so I know they’ll show out,” Raiola said.
“Getting to play in front of these people who pour their heart and soul into us, and want us to win so badly and be good… I think it’s just awesome to represent."
Nebraska has never lost a 100 milestone sellout game and they’ll look to keep that in tact on Friday night.
#22 Nebraska and #24 Illinois kick off at 7:00 p.m. CT on Friday.
