LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A van driver is free to go after a Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputy stopped the California vehicle, despite finding hundreds of pounds of marijuana estimated to be worth more than $1 million.

According to Chief Deputy Ben Houchin, on Thursday around 3:25 p.m., a member of LSO’s Criminal Interdiction Unit stopped an eastbound van for following too closely and improper lane change.

The deputy reportedly smelled marijuana and the driver gave consent to search the van.

LSO said the deputy found three oversized wooden shipping crates containing 435.47 lbs. of marijuana, 12,330 pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes, 12.69 lbs. of THC edibles, and 5,384 THC cartridges for vape pens, collectively valued at more than $1 million.

They said that the California van was headed to New York. However, after a more thorough investigation, probable cause was not established.

LSO said the driver did not know what he was carrying, so he was released.

The investigation is ongoing.
