FAIRBURY, NE — Fairbury is taking another step to attempt to nip minor violations of city codes in the bud.

A release from Mayor Spencer Brown Tuesday said the town will begin issuing citations to those that violate Fairbury's municipal codes.

Brown wrote in his statement the move comes, "In the efforts to help beautify and make Fairbury a safe and better place to live."

The notice comes as a result of an interlocal agreement struck between the City of Fairbury and Jefferson County. Late last year, the Fairbury City Council approved the agreement which allows the Jefferson County Attorney to prosecute the code violations in court at no cost to the city. The Jefferson County Commissioners signed the agreement in January.

Fairbury's municipal codes cover a wide variety of issues from rental inspections, unlicensed vehicles to loose pets. According to Brown, citations will be issued on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the city's code enforcement officer under the supervision of the city administrator and/or mayor. Municipal code violations can carry fines of up to $500.
