YANKTON, SD — With just 1:35 left in the game, the Doane Tigers took a 16-13 lead over the Mount Marty Lancers Saturday in Yankton, South Dakota. Thirty-four seconds later, though, the Tigers trailed by multiple possessions.

Doane's late lead was their first of the game. It came on a 48-yard field goal by Kelen Meyer — one of three on the day for freshman kicker.

Mount Marty retook the field down by three and two plays and 75 yards later were in the end zone to retake the lead at 20-16. Both plays on the scoring drive were passes from Clayton Byer to tight end Rex Ryken.

Things only got worse for Doane as they fumbled away the ensuing kickoff to the Lancers. Another two plays led to another score as Byer hit Trevor Fitzgerald on a 13-yard pass for another touchdown.

With 1:01 left on the clock, Doane trailed 27-16. That would be the final score.

It was a shocking 34 seconds that wiped out Doane's comeback. The Tigers trailed 13-3 late in the second quarter before getting a late first half field goal to make it 13-6 at the break.

Both teams were held off the board in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Tiger offense punched the ball in the end zone on a four yard run from Adam Wasserman to tie things up at 13 with five minutes left.

Doane's defense then forced a turnover on downs, giving the Tiger offense the ball back at Mount Marty's 38-yard line. That led to Meyer's field goal that gave Doane it's short-lived lead.

Wasserman was the star for Doane, rushing for 117 yards and a score on 28 carries. Tigers QB Cruz Kirwan finished 17-36 passing for 135 yards. The freshman quarterback struggled early, but was much improved in the second half completing 11-19 passes for 92 yards in the third and fourth quarters.

Jeremiah Payne led the Tigers in the receiving department, catching 6 passes for 56 yards.

Mounty Marty was led by quarterback Clayton Byer who went 8-15 passing for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Fellow Lancer QB Ken Gay II completed 6-9 passes for 102 yards.

Ryken finished with six catches for 148 yards and score. Fitzgerald also caught six balls for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Things don't get any easier for the Tigers who visit No. 1 Morningside next Saturday.
