FAIRBURY - The Fairbury Elks Lodge #1203 held their Hoop Shoot Free Throw contest on Saturday, November 23rd in Fairbury.  Their annual event is free to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 13 with the winners having the opportunity to advance to district, state, regional, and national contests.   This years Hoop shoot was a particularly special one as it was Coach Don Mahlman’s 50th year of running the event.  In the late 1960’s Individual Elk’s Lodges across Nebraska began holding these competitions.  Mahlman joined the the Fairbury Elks Lodge in 1967, and was appointed chairman of the Hoop Shoot Committee a year later where he continues to serve and put on the event each year.  Coach Don Mahlman was presented with an special award for his 50 years of service.
