BEATRICE, Neb. - The Gage County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement for Emergency Protective Custody (EPC) services between Region 5 and Gage County.

EPC refers to the protective custody of someone with a mental illness or someone experiencing a mental health crisis, becoming dangerous to themselves or others. While law enforcement are the primary entities responsible for initiating EPC, the agreement provides aid from mental health professionals.

Gage County Attorney Roger Harris called it "a very useful tool" for deputies if they come across someone with a mental illness, as the agreement provides an immediate contact for the deputy.

The agreement is in effect until June 30 of next year.
