WASHINGTON, Kansas -- The small town of Washington, Kansas, will soon see a big burst of energy as nearly 350 cyclists and about 50 support crew roll into town on Tuesday, June 11, as part of the annual Biking Across Kansas tour. This year’s route includes an overnight stay in Washington, with riders arriving after completing a 62.6-mile journey that begins in Mankato and passes through Belleville.
The group will set up camp at Washington County High School, where the school grounds will be transformed into a temporary home base for weary cyclists. Riders will pitch tents, grab hot meals, and prepare for the next leg of their week-long cross-state adventure.
Local organizations, churches, and volunteers are already working behind the scenes to welcome the influx of visitors. Meal plans are being coordinated to ensure riders have a hearty dinner and breakfast, with options ranging from home-cooked meals to community fundraisers.
After a night of rest in Washington, the cyclists will continue their trek eastward, heading through Marysville and onward to Sabetha as part of their cross-Kansas journey. The tour spans from the Colorado border to the Missouri state line, offering riders scenic views of Kansas backroads, rural communities, and rolling hills.
Biking Across Kansas, often referred to simply as BAK, began in 1975 and has grown into one of the state’s most beloved summer traditions. Each year, the event highlights different small towns and communities, giving cyclists a unique opportunity to explore Kansas while bringing a brief economic boost to the towns they pass through.
For Washington, hosting BAK is more than just a pit stop — it's a chance to showcase small-town hospitality and community pride on a statewide stage.
