Electronics recycling event held in Beatrice

BEATRICE – An electronics recycling event was held over the weekend in Beatrice, with a crew of volunteers braving a cool, windy Saturday morning to help gather up old electronic items brought in by area residents.
"We get a lot of TVs, a lot of flat screen TVs. I know I've had to bring several, myself, you know, with kids and balls....you know they get broke. It does seem like with the electronics, these days, the life expectancy of them is not very long. Batteries go dead...we just have to keep replacing them."
Ashley Hawks is Executive Director of Keep Beatrice Beautiful, coordinating the event held at the Indian Creek Mall, next to Harbor Freight Tools. You could bring in items like old laptops, towers, monitors, keyboards, TVs, CD Roms, cellphones, printers and other electronics.
Some items….though past their prime…may still end up having some future use. "Some people who don't use them anymore or don't think they are usable...Star City Recycling can kind of refurbish them and reuse them and give them to people in need. Star City Recycling picks everything up and they go through it. They've been in business for twenty-plus years and they do a good job."

Hawks says Keep Beatrice Beautiful conducted two of the electronics recycling events last year and hopes to stick with that formula.
"Between those two events last year, it was over nine thousand pounds of electronics. We planned to do it in the spring and in the fall if our budget allows us to do so."
Saturday’s electronics recycling collection was from nine a.m. until noon.
