FAIRBURY, Neb -- The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents about a phone scam in which criminals are impersonating deputies to trick people into handing over money.

In a press release from the Sheriff's office, officials say scammers are calling local citizens, claiming they have missed jury duty, have a civil action against them, or that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The fraudsters then attempt to pressure victims into making immediate payments over the phone to avoid legal consequences.

Authorities emphasize that no legitimate law enforcement officer will ever call and demand payment. Reports indicate that one scammer has been using the name "Lawrence Juge," calling from a 402 area code and providing a fake case number beginning with "CA."

Residents are urged to remain cautious and avoid sharing personal or financial information over the phone. If you receive such a call, do not engage, do not send money, and do not provide any personal details. Instead, hang up and report the incident to local law enforcement immediately.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public: If someone claiming to be law enforcement asks for money over the phone, it’s a scam. Stay vigilant and help spread the word to protect others from falling victim.
