Washington County officer injured in altercation with inmate

WASHINGTON, Kan. - A police officer in Washington, Kansas was injured in an altercation with an inmate on Tuesday evening. The officer has since been released and returned to duty, while the inmate has been assigned additional charges to his initial sentence.
According to a release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon an “altercation” between two inmates erupted in the Washington County jail. Corrections officers and other patrolling officers responded to the initial issue and attempted to isolate and contain one inmate, identified as Christopher Wright from Gage County.
Wright was ultimately moved into a secure lockdown cell, but by then “multiple” officers has been “assaulted.” Most notably, an officer identified as Deputy Sheriff Jarik Weiche suffered a “minor stab wound to his face area,” and was treated at a local hospital. Wright was also taken to the hospital for further treatment.
Weiche has since been released and was returned to duty. Wright has had additional charges added to his initial sentence, pending a review from the County Attorney. The Sheriff’s office says an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
