Husker defense prepares for big test in Bloomington
LINCOLN, NEB. - Nebraska’s defense has been stout to start the 2024 season and are the only team in the nation to not allow a rushing touchdown and sit second in the Big Ten in red zone defense.
Senior Defensive Lineman Ty Robinson says the groups mindset is simple.
“They don’t get in,” Robinson said. “Plain and simple. That’s just mindset mentality. That’s what we tell each other when we’re in the huddle. They don’t get in.”
Nebraska’s also been strong in the cornerback spot. After Tommi Hill went down with a foot injury, it’s since been Ceyair Wright carrying the load with Marques Buford Jr - the tandem has combined for seven pass breakups and two interceptions over the last three games.
But, with both Tommi Hill and Blye Hill working their way back to full strength, decisions may soon have to be made. For Defensive Coordinator Tony White, eh says that’s a good problem to have.
“The more we can be flexible, the more we can take snaps off guys, move guys around, you just have a better overall product,” White said. “Guys are fresher, faster, keeping each other sharp so we’ll see how that plays out this Saturday.”
Nebraska takes on an Indiana offense ranked first in the Big Ten and fourth nationally, averaging over 515 yards per game. Linebackers John Bullock and Javin Wright know there’s quite a challenge ahead.
“They can do anything, I give them mad respect because there’s nothing they really can’t do,” Wright said. “We just have to go in there and do what we do best.”
“Their quarterback is super savvy, he’s a veteran guy, he picks up on defenseless so our disguises will help us with that,” Bullock said. “Got two good backs that run the ball hard and their O-Line blocks hard. We’ll be ready for them.”
#16 Indiana ranks in the top five in the Big Ten in rushing offense, passing offense, total offense and scoring offense.
Indiana and Nebraska kick off at 11:00 a.m. CT Saturday on FOX.
