BEATRICE – Beatrice Mayor Bob Morgan says the city will continue to look at the issue of recycling, after having to close a recycling drop-off site next the Municipal Auditorium due to ongoing misuse.

"Unfortunately, when you set up the recycling trailers and then you have somebody who continues to misuse them, which actually can cause some health risk to our employees, we don't have much choice but to close it....and step back, and figure out what is the best option to recycle."

The service offered was free to the public. Midwest Area Refuse Solutions, the City of Beatrice garbage hauler…offers curbside recycling as an option, at a cost for residents of $8.50 a month.

"We understand recycling is important to a lot of people. Now we have to figure out, how do we move forward with recycling and in what form does that look like."

On three occasions, someone dumped animal parts...including a butchered pig...in roll-off containers used for holding recycled materials. Morgan says investigation has been taking place, but he doesn’t know if any person has been identified as responsible for the dumping.

"I just can't imagine why somebody would do that, either. It's just not one of those things you think should even begin to happen."

Morgan commented on the weekly "Ask the Mayor" program on KWBE, Thursday.
