BEATRICE – Beatrice Firefighters responded late Wednesday morning to a camper fire at the north edge of the city.

Smoke was observed coming from the unit around the 38-hundred block of North 6th.

Firefighters used a hand line and entered the camper, extinguishing a fire in the kitchen area of the unit.  The flames were under control within three minutes after arriving on scene.

Captain Jeremy Seggerman says the accidental fire was caused by items left too close to a space heater that was running.

No one was injured and firefighters rescued a cat belonging to the camper owner.  Nobody was at the unit when the fire broke out, at around 11:45 a.m.

The American Red Cross was called to help an adult and four children displaced by the fire, which caused an estimated $2,000 damage.  Eleven firefighters responded, and officials left the scene at around 12:45 p.m.
