BEATRICE – It was a weak tornado that damaged a Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway yard in southern Gage County, Monday night.

The National Weather Service reviewed the storm and determined an EF-0 tornado formed northwest of Wymore…creating peak wind speeds estimated at 80-miles-per-hour.   Part of the covering was torn off an NDOT salt storage facility, doing damage to the frame of the hoop building and a nearby fence along the boundary of the property.

Social media video and photos showed the presence of a possible tornado in that area during severe weather.  The National Weather Service said the tornado, classified in the weakest category…happened at around 7:07 p.m., lasted for only about a minute and traveled along the ground for nearly a mile.

Its maximum width was estimated at about 30 yards.  Weather officials say storm spotters provided video that matched the short damage path.  After doing damage to the storage building, the tornado traveled northeast, breaking some tree branches before dissipating.   There were no reported injuries.

Later Monday evening, the National Weather Service said three tornadoes, all rating as EF-1...touched down in southwest Iowa between 8:48 p.m. and 9:13 p.m.  The tornadoes were near Glenwood, Iowa…near Carson and Macedonia…and near the Minden-Shelby, Iowa area.  Those tornadoes snapped trees and downed power poles and damaged farmsteads.  The highest estimated peak wind speed was 110-miles-per-hour, in the tornado near Glenwood. It was on the ground for over five miles.

That tornado caused major damage to a farm, destroying a large shed and two large grain bins….scattering the debris a half-mile away.
