FAIRBURY, Neb --  The Chief officers of the Fairbury Rural Fire Department released a public service message to the public ahead of the upcoming use of fireworks during this time of extreme dry conditions.

In the announcement they offer some tips for keeping fireworks celebrations safe and incident free.   The ideas include having a hose or bucket of water nearby to deal with any mishaps, full dousing spent fireworks before discarding them, and continue to monitor the area around ignitions sites after your done setting them off.

The officers also recommend clearing piled leaves and debris from around decks and foundations, and even wetting down areas that may be susceptible to stray embers.

The statement also thanked the residents for understanding as open burning permit limitations are now being imposed for the foreseeable future in the Fairbury Rural Fire District.

This Independence Day holiday, we would like to offer a few ideas for keeping fireworks celebrations
safe and incident-free. Please be sure to have a hose or bucket of water nearby to deal with mishaps
whenever you’re enjoying fireworks. Take extra care to fully douse spent fireworks before discarding
them, and continue to monitor the area around ignition sites after you’ve finished setting off your
fireworks. Also, clearing piled leaves and other debris from around decks and building foundations
prior to the start of fireworks celebrations in your neighborhood—and even wetting down areas that
may be susceptible to stray embers—is a particularly good idea in these extremely dry conditions.

We want everyone to wish our great nation a Happy Birthday without having to wish they’d been more
mindful of the elevated risks posed by fireworks during a drought season. On that note, we also thank
our residents for understanding as open burning permit limitations are now being imposed for the
foreseeable future in the Fairbury Rural Fire District.

Happy Fourth of July from the Chief officers of the Fairbury Rural Fire Department
