Probation revoked, Missouri man now headed for prison for Beatrice bank robbery
Once sentenced to probation, Terry Bailes will now serve a Nebraska prison term
BEATRICE – A Missouri man given a chance on probation after trying to rob a Beatrice bank, is now going to prison four years later.
A three-year-probation sentence for attempted robbery handed to 59-year-old Terry Bailes in 2018, was revoked Wednesday by Gage County District Court Judge Rick Schreiner….the judge who originally sentenced him.
"I took a chance, and thought I was setting you up in a situation where you could be successful...and put you on probation....and you took that, and promptly told me where to stick it."
Bailes appeared in court, having previously waived his right to an attorney. He absconded from probation in 2019. A warrant was issued….and he eventually voluntarily surrendered in the State of Missouri. He had been living in Platte City, Missouri. Judge Schreiner Wednesday sentenced Bailes to 7-to-10 years in prison.
"You showed up at a local bank, took ten dollars...and wanted to go to prison so the State of Nebraska could pay for your gout....which is a stupid reason....(Bailes)..."You can't get any help out there on the streets."..(Schreiner).."well, you know.....here's the deal. Quit smoking pot and doing drugs and maybe you'll have a little more opportunity and a little more luck getting some help out on the streets.....doing something."
Bailes earned 330 days off his prison term for time already spent in custody.
In October of 2017, Beatrice Police arrested Bailes after responding to a report of a robbery at Great Western Bank, which was located at 10th and Court.
Bailes was found about a block away from the bank and told police he was the person they were looking for. He had been given $10 by a bank employee, which he used to buy a pack of cigarettes.
Bank video surveillance confirmed Bailes as the suspect in the holdup. Police were told Bailes had his hands in his pockets during the incident, pointed outwards toward the employee. He was found not to be armed.
