One dead after crash near Daykin

DAYKIN, NE — Authorities say one person is dead after a crash in southeast Nebraska happened Saturday afternoon. 

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, 23-year-old Marshal Holtzclaw of Alexandria, Neb., was killed in the two-vehicle crash. 

Police say it happened on Highway 4 just west of Highway 15 Saturday at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Holtzclaw was heading west on the highway while another vehicle, a dump truck driven by 43-year-old Shane Airey of Oklahoma, was traveling east. Police say the two collided head on. 

Holtzclaw was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. Airey was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. 

The crash remains under investigation. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County Rescue, Daykin Fire and Rescue, Jefferson County Ambulance District, Jefferson County Emergency Management and Nebraska State Patrol all responded to the accident.
