One arrested after overnight standoff near Daykin
DAYKIN, NE — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office arrested one man after an overnight standoff that lasted nearly six hours Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
51-year-old Christopher Drees of Daykin is facing multiple felonies after the incident.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, authorities received a report of an intoxicated person at a house near Daykin who was creating a disturbance and who had shot a gun outside of the home. Police say the report indicated the man's actions were making people inside the house fear for their lives.
The first deputies arrived on scene at 10:47 p.m., eight minutes after 911 call. Police say when they arrived Drees was inside the home, but everyone else had made it outside. Authorities could see Drees through a window, but were unable to determine if he was still armed.
Deputies tried for hours to talk with Drees via phone and loud speaker, but Drees did not cooperate and wouldn't exit the home, according to police. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office then called the Nebraska State Patrol for assistance.
The standoff continued until nearly 5 a.m. when police entered the home and took Drees into custody. No injuries were reported. Drees has been lodged in Jefferson County Jail and faces charges of Terroristic Threats, Possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Drees is already a convicted felon from a previous incident.
Police say there was never a threat to the public during the incident.
The Nebraska State Patrol's Tactical Response Team and negotiating team assisted with the response.
