Lincoln man stabbed and dies in alleyway

Authorities are investigating a stabbing of a Lincoln resident that led to his death in the alley near a convenience store.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Authorities are investigating a stabbing of a Lincoln resident that led to his death in the alley near a convenience store.

The Lincoln Police Department said they were dispatched to 1300 block of N 27th at 8:57 p.m. on July 1 for a call of a reported stabbing.

Officers said the caller heard yelling and went towards the area where 26-year-old Austin Gress, of Lincoln, was discovered with serious injuries.

According to the report, the victim was found with an obvious stab wound. The officers attempted life-saving measures but the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

LPD said a witness saw the victim and the male suspect involved in an altercation over a bicycle in front of the store and the suspect was allegedly known to the victim.

Officials said the whereabouts of the suspect is unknown and this will remain an active investigation.

According to authorities, the LPD investigators are working to locate the suspect as well as continuing to gather physical evidence, examine available videos, and conduct interviews. LPD said they know his identity but are not releasing his name in order to locate him safely.

LPD said they completed the investigation of the crime scene at 4:30 Saturday morning and the area is open to all traffic, vehicle and foot.

The victim's name is yet to be released to ensure the family has been notified.

The police ask the public to respect the privacy of the victim's family and friends as they grieve the loss of their loved one.
