BREAKING: Former Jefferson County Deputy found not guilty of failure/neglect to serve warrant
Wilbur Young has been found not guilty of a 2021 incident in which he allegedly failed to serve a warrant.
FAIRBURY - Wilbur Young has been found not guilty of a 2021 incident in which he allegedly failed to serve a warrant.
He was tasked with serving a warrant between October 27-November 26 against Jerry Barnes for violation of felony probation. Barnes was one of several key witnesses in the case, and his testimony would play a big role in the outcome of the case. Wilbur Young also testified as the final witness in the case.
In addition to Barnes' testimony, another major talking point was a conversation between Young and other members of the department. Young had thought to have seen Barnes riding a motorcycle he knew to be unendorsed, and approached him saying he would take action if he saw Barnes riding it again. He also noticed a black portfolio bag in Barnes' possession, who is a six-time felon and had been known to sell drugs. Young claimed he didn't take any action because he was unable to see the subject because the person on the motorcycle was wearing a helmet and didn't have probable cause to search the portfolio. He would later find out from those at the station, there was a warrant out for Barnes' arrest.
The day began just before 9:00 AM with jury selection which concluded just after 11:15 AM. After several witnesses, the jury, made of five women and one man, members began deliberations at 8:00 PM and the verdict was delivered just before 10:00 PM.
