Happy return for State Champion Beatrice Orangemen
Orangemen use stifling defense to help bring home Class B state title.
BEATRICE – Nothing like a welcome back caravan, following a state title. The Beatrice Orangemen boys basketball team, seeded sixth, knocked off 5th seeded Elkhorn in overtime, 36-34 to take home the Class B Boys state title.
The players and coaches, getting a Beatrice Fire and Rescue Department escort, were met by cheers and honking horns as they stepped off the bus back at Beatrice High School.
The Orangemen made their way to the final by defeating Elkhorn Mt. Michael, Waverly, then Elkhorn. But it didn’t come easy. As time was winding down in regulation, the Orangemen had the last possession… Elkhorn switching from its zone to a man-to-man defense. That’s when Kaden Glynn buried a three from the left wing to send the game to overtime.
The Orangemen, who have prided themselves on tough defense this season, held off Elkhorn in overtime for the two-point victory and the eighth state boys basketball title in school history.
The Orangemen held each of their opponents to under 40 points in their three-game run to the Class B title and a 19-and-6 overall record.
