WILBER, NE — A southeast Nebraska volunteer group is getting recognized for its efforts to transform a local pond.

The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum honored Pathways to Progress of Wilber with the Community Landscape Award earlier this month.  The award recognizes the group’s work to change Wilber Lake from a weedy pond into a renovated lake surrounded by new trees.

A news release says the recently planted trees include 11 different species of oak. The release says the renovation enhances wildlife habitat and will reduce erosion.

The tree planting is part of an ongoing effort to restore and improve the lake. More information can be found on the Pathways to Progress Facebook page.
