SIDNEY, Neb. — The Sidney Awana program hosted its annual Grand Prix on Wednesday night at the Sidney Evangelical Free Church, drawing 64 young racers and their families for an evening of competition and fellowship.

Participants were evenly split between the younger Sparks group and the older T&T group, according to Awana leader Theresa Reimers. Walking tacos, drinks and desserts were available for purchase during the event.

“This is an annual event that we do every year. We had 64 racers this year evenly split between our younger Sparks and older T&T group,” Reimers said.

In the Sparks division, Luke Larson took first place in speed, followed by William Goding in second and Zoie Wright in third. In the design category, Anna Sanders earned first place, with Luke Larson second and Hannah Fehringer third.

In the T&T division, Allie Truetken claimed first in speed, with Eleanor Jansen finishing second and Elijah Popovich third. Makalah Karashinski won the design category, followed by Eva Jansen in second and Charlie Larson in third.

Reimers said the event is about more than racing.

“It is a great event to bring families together and have a night of fellowship and friendly racing,” she said. “It is also a great reminder of how we all start out like our wooden blocks and Jesus makes us into a beautiful masterpiece as we follow Him.”

Awana is an interdenominational program for children from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and runs from September through April, closely following the school calendar. Meetings are held each Wednesday from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. at the Sidney Evangelical Free Church.
