FAIRBURY, Neb -- The Fairbury Rural Fire Department has received a 750-dollar donation from the Nebraska Community Blood Bank as part of the organization’s Hometown Heroes campaign.

The check was presented Jan. 13 in recognition of the community’s successful participation in the annual program, which encourages local organizations and residents to work together to support blood donation efforts.

The Hometown Heroes campaign runs each year from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Nebraska Community Blood Bank allocates funds to blood drive partners who meet collection goals during the qualifying period.

Qualifying blood drives hosted by Jefferson Community Health and Life were held June 10 and Aug. 5, 2024. Those drives collected a total of 66 units of blood and welcomed two new donors, according to Nebraska Community Blood Bank.

The Hometown Heroes program will continue in 2026. Jefferson Community Health and Life will host qualifying blood drives on June 2 and July 28. Appointments can be scheduled at ncbb.org using sponsor code JCHC or by calling Nebraska Community Blood Bank at 402-486-9414.

Nebraska Community Blood Bank officials note that someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. Because blood cannot be manufactured, donations rely entirely on volunteers.

Community members interested in participating in the Hometown Heroes program can visit ncbb.org/heroes or email [email protected]. The Nebraska Community Blood Bank bloodmobile visits Jefferson Community Health and Life six times each year. The next scheduled blood drive is Feb. 16.
