Pickup sideswipes car, killing northeast Kansas man

BEATRICE – An accident has taken the life of a northeast Kansas man, from Sabetha.
The Kansas Highway Patrol investigated a two-vehicle collision Wednesday morning, on U.S. Highway 36 a quarter-mile east of Hiawatha.
A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was westbound on the highway when it traveled left of center, sideswiping an eastbound 2011 Nissan Altima.
The driver of the Altima, 31-year-old DeAndre Harris of Sabetha, died at the scene of the collision. The driver of the pickup, 98-year-old Charles Hopp, of Highland, Kansas…was taken to the K-U Medical Center in Kansas City, with serious injuries.
The KHP says Hopp was wearing a seatbelt…while the fatality victim, Harris, was not using a safety restraint.
After the collision the pickup struck a KDOT fence coming to rest in the south ditch. The car also ended up in the south ditch off U.S. 36.
The collision happened at around 6 a.m.
