BEATRICE – It’s only a matter of time before the Beatrice area sees its first significant snow of the winter season.

A brief taste of wintry weather is possible over the next couple of days in the form of rain, freezing rain or snow…..though little accumulation is expected.

Mayor Bob Morgan says residents can do some simple things to help out city snow crews when winter really does hit.  "A lot of times when it's a really bad storm we will declare a snow emergency, where there's no parking on the emergency routes. The other side of it is, when they go down one side of the street, a lot of times it's an opportunity to move your vehicle to the other side. For the most part during the entire year, we don't really worry about the overnight parking or parking in one area more than 24 hours. However, it becomes very evident when you have a snowplow and the car hasn't been moved for a week. We try really hard to maybe contact with the person, but at some point in time....every once in a while, we have to issue a ticket because it messes up that entire street."

Beatrice Street Department crews, trucks and graders perform extensive plowing in the city, also making use of sand and salt and a de-icing liquid as a preemptive measure when icy surfaces are expected.  Trucks were applying the de-icer to bridges in the community this week.

"I think, for the most part, everybody does a really good job. Having lived in a number of communities, I will tell you that the snow removal, in Beatrice, is actually phenomenal. I think we typically start scooping snow.....or moving snow after two, two-and-a-half inches, maybe three...because it just is a lot easier to get it off."

A winter weather advisory covers parts of south-central and southeast Nebraska through 9 a.m. Saturday....and northern areas of Kansas…..through 9 p.m. Friday.
