BEATRICE – A retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant in the U.S Army originally from Tecumseh, today said Veterans Day has evolved to honor all who have displayed the traits of honor, courage and commitment, with unwavering dedication to those who serve alongside them, and their country.

"We do have a true love for our country. Most Americans profess to love their veterans, especially at gatherings like this. While their feelings are sincere, it is important to remember that veterans are defending us 365 days a year. The heroism that has been demonstrated time and again by veterans, from the American Revolution to the Global War on Terrorism, is sometimes unnoticed by many who enjoy the security and freedoms, their sacrifice has provided."

During a public ceremony attended by veterans, family members and students at the Beatrice High School Hevelone Center, Army Retired Staff Sergeant Kevin McKinney took time to specifically recognize veterans in each wartime conflict the U.S. has been involved in…from World War One to the Gulf War and post-nine-eleven.

He said while all veterans have not necessarily faced combat, they all made a solemn promise to sacrifice their lives if called upon by their country. "Your service didn't end, when you took off the uniform. You continue to enrich our communities with youe leadership, your work ethic, and your commitment to service. You are living examples of citizenship and civic responsibility. On this Veterans Day, let's commit to doing more than just saying thenk you for your service. Let's pledge support for our veterans in tangible ways. The greatest tribute we can pay to our veterans, is to be active, engaged citizens who work tirelessly to build a nation worthy of their sacrifice."

McKinney said citizens can do something simple, to recognize Veterans year-round. "A sincere thank you goes a long way. However, I challenge you to show your thanks by simply enjoying the freedoms that you have."

For several years now, Beatrice High School has hosted a Veterans Day ceremony that bridges the gap between generations of citizens.

The Beatrice High School Band and the BHS Vocal Music Department provided the music for Monday’s ceremony, retaining a tradition of playing the service anthems of the various branches of military service, honoring those who have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
