Nebraska looking to improve on both sides of the ball vs. Northern Iowa
LINCOLN, NEB. - The final score from Nebraska's matchup with Colorado reads 28-10 in favor of the Big Red, which would appear to be a dominant Husker win.
While Nebraska won, and ultimately controlled the entire game, coordinators Tony White and Marcus Satterfield want to see continues success, but above all else, improvement on both sides of the ball.
“It’s Tuesday, so right now, we’re the worst defense in the country,” Defensive Coordinator Tony White said. “You can’t preach the process on one day, then do something different.”
“We’re not very good at interior blocking right now… We have to clean that up and improve,” Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield said.
Nebraska’s offense recorded 21 first half points and utilized strong running of the football, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. However, the Huskers failed to score in the second half, due in part to a slew of penalties, stalling out potential scoring drives. Satterfield says solving those issue begins with the coaching staff.
“We have to coach the technique better,” Satterfield said. “We have to demand the technique better as coaches. That was 176 yards of offense and a touchdown called back.. That can’t happen. And that starts with us as coaches.”
On the flip side, the Blackshirts dominated, sacking Shedder Sanders six times. The defense also recorded 22 quarterback hurries, with 19 on rushes of three or four. Nash Hutmacher recorded a sack and three tackles in Saturday’s win.
“That’s something we talked about all offseason, playing coverage then getting to the quarterback with four,” Hutmacher said. “We’re going to just keep improving with it and not get complacent.”
And lastly, freshman Dylan Raiola is off to a 2-0 start in his college career. Having completed nearly 75% of his passes for three touchdowns Raiola says he’s getting more comfortable as the seasons continues.
“The first two games were a lot of fun, kind of was feeling some things out, but I’m feeling pretty comfortable with the speed of the game and I think now our team can take a huge step and I’m excited for that,” Raiola said.
Nebraska meets Northern Iowa for the first time in series history. The Panthers enter 2-0, ranked 21st in the FCS coaches poll.
Kick off is set for 6:30 PM CT at Memorial Stadium.
