Doane men's basketball announces updated coaching staff
CRETE, Neb. -- Doane Men’s Basketball has announced its 2024-25 coaching staff for Ian McKeithen.
Shane Sweany returns to Doane as the lead assistant coach after three years at Southwestern Community College in Iowa.
Sweany was a member of the Doane coaching staff during the 2020-21 season as a graduate assistant before taking an assistant coaching position at SWCC. At SWCC, he was an assistant for two years before being promoted to head coach at the start of the 2023-24 season. The Spartans went 16-15 in his one season as head coach, the most wins since 2018.
Sweany served as a student assistant for the University of Central Missouri before graduating in May 2020. He is originally from Olathe, Kan., and attended Olathe South High School.
Charlie Chappetto will join the Tigers as a graduate assistant coach and head of the junior varsity program.
Chappetto comes to Doane from the University of South Alabama where he served as a student manager for two years before moving to head student manager for the past two seasons. Originally from Chicago, Ill., Chappetto was a three-sport athlete at Mount Carmel High School.
“I am very excited to get to work with our new coaching staff for next season,” McKeithen said. “We are very fortunate to have Coach Sweany back on campus at Doane. His familiarity with our university and experience as a head coach will help him make an immediate impact with our players and program.”
The Tigers went 7-21 last season, and ended the season on a 12 game losing streak. It was led by Brady Timm who averaged 17.3 points per game.
“Coach Chappetto has worked for some incredible coaches at the NCAA D1 level and those experiences will give him a great head start as he takes over our graduate assistant position,” McKeithen said.
Sweany replaces Joel Stryker, who recently accepted a position at an NCAA Division II institution.
