FAIRBURY, NE — An organization in southeast Nebraska brought holiday cheer to several families days before Christmas.

The Elks Lodge in Fairbury gave out food for Christmas day meals to 50 families Wednesday afternoon. Meals were given out on a first-come first-served basis.

The families received soups, sides, a Christmas ham and desserts.

And in spirit of the giving season, Fairbury Public Schools donated mixed vegetables and milk to the giveaway.

The donated food was supposed to be used for school lunches Wednesday and Thursday — the last two days before the holiday break. Fairbury cancelled school those two days, however.  The district did not want to the food to go to waste and donated what would’ve perished before school resumes in January.

Organizers say it's great to be able to help out those in need. They bought the food with a grant from the National Elks Foundation.
