Lincoln Children's Zoo closes avian exhibits due to bird flu
The Lincoln Children's Zoo announced the temporary closure of the Aviary, Penguin Exhibit and Flamingo Yard.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Lincoln Children's Zoo announced the temporary closure of the Aviary, Penguin Exhibit and Flamingo Yard.
The exhibits closed starting Monday and will be closed until further notice.
The Zoo said they are implementing temporary proactive measures to prevent their avian species from contracting highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
According to the Lincoln Children's Zoo, a case of HPAI was found in birds in Douglas County. The protective measures are only precautionary, the zoo said none of their birds have been diagnose with HPAI.
Not only will there be exhibit closures, but avian species that are susceptible will not be taking part in animal encounters.
"Staff will be implementing additional protocols including enhanced disinfection, increased PPE, limiting access to vulnerable species and behind-the-scenes areas as well as other protocols," said the Lincoln Children's Zoo in a press release.
Also in the release, they said the team will be evaluating the situation daily, so it's unknown how long the temporary protocols will be in place.
"Our top priority is the health and safety of our animals, so we are implementing these protocols immediately out of an abundance of caution to protect our birds against avian influenza," said General Curator Lissa McCaffree.
