US and Iran are holding a third round of nuclear talks as more American forces deploy to the Mideast
GENEVA (AP) — Indirect talks between Iran and the United States have started in Geneva. Oman’s Foreign Ministry published images of U.S. special Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Bader al-Busaidi on Thursday. The location appeared to be the Omani diplomatic residence in Geneva along the shores of Lake Geneva. An Associated Press journalist earlier saw two convoys believed to be carrying Iranian and U.S. diplomats arrive there. U.S. President Donald Trump wants a deal to constrain Iran’s nuclear program, and he sees an opportunity while the country is struggling at home with growing dissent following nationwide protests last month.
Cuba says 4 killed in speedboat shooting were attempting to infiltrate the country
HAVANA (AP) — Cuba says the 10 passengers on a boat that opened fire on its soldiers were armed Cubans living in the U.S. who were trying to infiltrate the island and unleash terrorism. The announcement late Wednesday came hours after Cuba said its soldiers killed four people and wounded six others aboard a Florida-registered speed boat that had entered Cuban waters and opened fire on the soldiers first. Cuba’s government says the majority of the 10 people on the boat “have a known history of criminal and violent activity.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the U.S. is gathering its own information.
Bill and Hillary Clinton, battle-tested, gear up for another Washington fight
WASHINGTON (AP) — Bill and Hillary Clinton are slated to testify this week in a House investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, part of a deal with Republicans after it became clear that Congress — with the help of some Democrats — was on track to hold them in contempt if they refused to cooperate. For the battle-hardened couple, it amounts to one more Washington brawl. And like so many of the battles that came before, this one is another mix of questionable judgment, sexual impropriety, money and power.
A Hong Kong court quashes fraud conviction of ex-media mogul Jimmy Lai
HONG KONG (AP) — A Hong Kong appellate court on Thursday quashed onetime media magnate Jimmy Lai’s fraud convictions linked to lease violations, in a rare victory in the prominent activist’s legal battles. On Thursday, the judges approved the founder of Apple Daily newspaper's challenge over a case tied to lease violations at his media business. Lai was convicted and sentenced to five years and nine months in prison in 2022 for two fraud charges. Earlier this month, Lai also was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his conviction under a China-imposed national security law. His plight has evoked grief over the city’s loss of press freedom.
Asian shares mostly rise after Nvidia earnings beat expectations
HONG KONG (AP) — Asian stock markets have mostly advanced following stronger-than-expected earnings from chipmaker Nvidia, which helped ease some investor fears over the boom in artificial intelligence. Japan’s Nikkei 225 surpassed the 59,000 level for the first time and South Korea's Kospi extended its rally after it passed the 6,000 mark earlier this week. U.S. futures declined and Nvidia was up only 0.2% in afterhours trading after giving up earlier sharp gains. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 gained 0.8% for a second straight gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.6%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 1.3%. Nvidia's results came after markets closed on Wednesday.
Third victim dies from wounds suffered in Rhode Island ice rink attack, police say
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Officials say a third victim has died from injuries sustained during a deadly shooting at a youth hockey game in Rhode Island. Pawtucket police said Wednesday that Gerald Dorgan has died. He had been in critical condition following last week’s shooting at an ice rink. His daughter, Rhonda Dorgan, and adult grandson, Aidan Dorgan, were also killed in the shooting. Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien says he was heartbroken that another person has died because of the shooting. Police have identified the shooter as 56-year-old Robert Dorgan. The shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Robert Dorgan’s ex-wife was Rhonda Dorgan and adult son was Aidan Dorgan.
Memorial services for Jesse Jackson begin at Chicago headquarters of his civil rights organization
CHICAGO (AP) — Memorial services for the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. begin in Chicago and stretch across the country to honor his long civil rights legacy. On Thursday, he lies in repose for two days at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters. Events also take place in Washington, D.C., and in South Carolina, where he was born and began his activism. Jackson died last week at 84 after a rare neurological disorder limited his mobility and speech. Tributes have spread worldwide. Chicago's L trains have used digital screens to display Jackson’s portrait and his well-known mantra, “I am Somebody!” His family says the services are open to all.
Residents want local governments to end contracts that let ICE train on their gun ranges
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) — Residents in a Southern California city want local police to stop letting federal immigration agents train at a publicly owned firing range. Some residents of Escondido say Immigration and Customs Enforcement has changed by donning masks and using hard-handed tactics in raids that turned deadly in such places as Minneapolis and Chicago. They don't want to give agents a reason to come to their city. They packed a City Council meeting Wednesday to discuss the arrangement. Similar debates have sprung up in various communities since the Trump administration has ramped up immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security didn't comment on the local backlash.
What to know about the LA superintendent whose home was searched by FBI
Los Angeles schools chief Alberto Carvalho has developed a reputation for improving academics and graduation rates while leading two major U.S. districts. He had his home searched Wednesday by the FBI as part of a federal investigation. Agents served search warrants at the home, as well as at the headquarters of the Los Angeles Unified School District, and a location near Miami. Carvalho was previously that city's schools superintendent. Authorities have not given details on what they are investigating.
FBI fires agents who worked on Trump classified document investigation, AP sources say
WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI has fired additional agents who worked on an investigation into President Donald Trump, this time terminating employees who participated in the probe into the Republican’s hoarding of classified documents. That's according to people familiar with the matter. The firings disclosed Wednesday are part of a broader personnel purge under the leadership of Director Kash Patel, a Trump appointee who, over the last year, has pushed out dozens of employees who either contributed to investigations of the president or who were perceived as not in alignment with the administration’s agenda. The Justice Department has engaged in similarly sweeping firings of prosecutors since Trump took office last year.
