KEARNEY, Neb. — Strong winds swept across Nebraska Thursday, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service and creating hazardous conditions for drivers in high-profile vehicles.

Wind gusts reached between 55 and 65 miles per hour across much of the region, with some areas near Lexington and Harlan reporting gusts exceeding 70 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service out of Hastings.

Local authorities advised against prescribed burning due to the risk of rapidly spreading fires.

Blowing debris, including leaves and tumbleweeds, was visible across roadways and neighborhoods, while many residents chose to stay indoors because of the cold and blustery weather.

Several semi-truck drivers told News Channel Nebraska the strong winds forced them to slow down and take breaks, but did not stop them from completing their routes.

The National Weather Service says winds are expected to gradually ease Thursday night.
