BEATRICE – Beatrice Street crew members wrapped up another successful curbside large-item pickup this spring.

Street Superintendent Jason Moore gave a summary to city officials Monday night, ranking the three-day collection earlier this month in the top ten of events that have now gone on, since 1989.  Street employees and one employee each from the water department and Midwest Area Refuse Solutions do the hauling, using dump trucks and loaders.

"We do have an expense of $18,628. I believe if you look back, that's the second highest price of what we've had attached to this. Some of that probably has to do with just wages going up over the years."

The annual event is for large items only…such as furniture, appliances, old lawnmowers and the like. Still, Moore says there are still some rule-benders.

"We still have the same garbage that gets put out every year. We had boxes of dirty diapers that were put out this year. We hadn't seen that for a couple of years, but we had a couple of locations this year. We still see tires, we still see lumber and construction debris. We still see a few mattresses that are out there. But I think for the most part, the mattress drop-off out at the compost site has really worked out well."

A total of 108 truckloads of items were hauled to the landfill….one of the highest totals over the past five years. There were ten roll-off containers full of mattresses, dropped off at the city compost site.

"It has been a good year....no accidents, no injuries. Whenever I can say that for my employees, it's been a good year."  The collection takes place over three days….Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday…..covering a different section of the community each day. Residential property owners registered for the program online.
