FAIRBURY, Neb -- On Tuesday, the Jefferson County Commissioners honored Ernest Marschman Jr. of Daykin as their October Veteran of the Month.
Marschman grew up working the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War in May of 1953.
During his time in the military, he worked in several areas from cooking to operating heavy equipment. Marschman was also assigned to the Strategic Air Command, which served as the bombardment arm of the U.S. Air Force and was used as a major part of the nuclear deterrent against the Soviet Union.
Just prior to getting out of service, Corporal Marschman was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Ernest Marschman Jr and his wife Luree then moved to the Alexandria area where they farmed until retirement. He now lives in Dakin with his Son and Daughter-in-law and will be 91 this year.
In addition to the honor of Veteran of the Month, Marschman was presented with a Quilt of Valor, and a handmade wreath made by local youth Marley Rosener of Fairbury.
The Jefferson County Commissioners honor and thank a new veteran on each first Tuesday of the month as an ongoing recognition effort.
