LINCOLN, Neb - You know the voice - Loud. Baritone. And when you hear it, you know it’s football Saturday in Lincoln.

Since 2016, Nate Rohr has served as the Public Address announcer for Husker football. Recently, the Beatrice native sat down with News Channel Nebraska to share his story.

“I grew up a Husker fan,” Rohr said. “I grew up in that golden age of Husker football, and I learned very rapidly that I was not going to be big enough, strong enough, tough enough to play for the Huskers and I knew I needed to find another way to contribute.”

In addition to his PA work at Memorial Stadium, Rohr also serves as the Public Address announcer for University of Nebraska-Omaha men’s and women’s basketball, he occasionally takes on PA duties with the Omaha Storm Chasers, and does play-by-play for Husker Softball and area high school games.

Since the age of seven, he had his heart set on being behind the mic. His first work as a PA announcer began at Beatrice High School, before taking a job at Beatrice’s local radio station, KWBE. Board operating Husker football and working Sunday’s, Rohr was able to hone his craft, particularly during the eight and nine o’clock hours on Sunday nights.

“I basically commandeered the air for my own hour long sports show,” Rohr said. “I would read the AP copy of NFL games, the newest college football Top 25, whatever baseball news was happening… That as the first hour, but the second hour I would do more of what I was supposed to.. news, weather, all of that. There’d be one or two more taped programs, you’d do the news once more at 11 and then you’d turn it off.”

Upon getting to college at Nebraska, Rohr took a job as a Sports Information Director (SID). In addition, he would take up any and all opportunities to be behind a mic. When Nebraska’s former PA announcer took a job with the Milwaukee Brewers, the door opened for one of Rohr’s dreams: announcing at Memorial Stadium.

“I had been around Husker athletics and Husker football quite a bit,” Rohr said. “I had spotted and done stats for the radio network, and the athletic department knew I could announce because I had done it for so many sport so in 2016 I was offered the spot.”

And the rest is history.

But, before Rohr makes any announcement, makes one of his famous third down call, or belts out a Husker score, there’s the prep work. Instead of using the provided numerical roster, Rohr delicately makes his own spot chart by hand.

Something he does for more than just his PA work.

“I just like the feeling of prepping! I like doing it,” Rohr said. “I feel like I invested more in doing a good job, and, I mentioned I do some football play-by-play, so it’s also practicing for that.”

Now, over 90,000 people hear Rohr’s voice on fall Saturday’s in Lincoln. He takes pride in his PA job, while having fun doing it.

“Announcing for Nebraska here at Memorial Stadium is my way of contributing to his program I care about,” Rohr said. “It’s also a hell of a lot of fun! Instead of you paying to get into the ballpark, they pay you to be here, you get a good seat.. So, it’s a lot of fun, and I get to contribute to Nebraksa football. That’s what this job means to me.”
