Several people, dog displaced following overnight basement fire

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Authorities in Lincoln said they extinguished an overnight fire that displaced several people and a pet.
The Lincoln Fire & Rescue said that around 2 a.m. on Sunday, they were called to a home in the 1400 block of S 16th St. for a house fire.
When crews arrived, LFR said that the occupants of the house were outside and the fire was in the basement.
Officials said that LFR crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but the house was a total loss.
LFR reported the cause of the fire was careless smoking.
Inspectors said an assessment of the fire valued the property at $103,000 and around $40,000 for the contents.
LFR said there were eight people and one dog that were displaced by the fire, and Red Cross was on scene.
There were no reported injuries.
