LPD sees spike in counterfeit currency

Lincoln Police said they have been seeing an increase in counterfeit currency investigations.

LINCOLN, Neb.-- Lincoln Police said they have been seeing an increase in counterfeit currency investigations. 

From January 1st, 2022 through June 22, officials say they have investigated 122 reports of counterfeit currency. For comparison, during this same time frame in 2021 they had only 75, which represents a 62% increase. 

In the year 2021, LPD said they had a total of 168 reports of counterfeit. 

It appears most of the counterfeit currency are $20 and $100 bills and being passed at restaurants and convenience stores.
