BEATRICE - The Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District is involved in an effort to address water quality concerns in the Turkey Creek watershed.

Working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, officials are seeking producers who want to help address concerns regarding nitrates, Atrazine and E. Coli.

The project area includes more than 75,000 acres from southwest of Crete, to southwest of DeWitt.  It includes wellhead protection areas for both DeWitt and Wilber.

NRD officials say cost-sharing and incentives will be available through the project to help develop best management practices to reduce contamination.  That includes things such as cover crops, crop rotation for small grains and integrated pest management.  It also includes improved grazing management, limited stream or river access, restoring stream buffers and upgrading septic systems.

Persons interested in finding out more about the cost-sharing opportunities can contact Jerry Bucy, Special Projects Coordinator at 402-228-3402 or [email protected]
