ALLIANCE, Neb. -- The Alliance Police Department is warning residents about an increase in phone scam incidents reported throughout the area.

These scams often involve individuals posing as government officials, law enforcement officers, or representatives from legitimate organizations in an attempt to pressure victims into sending money.

Residents are reminded that a legitimate government agency will never:

• Demand payment over the phone

• Instruct you to go to your bank and wire money

• Tell you not to contact law enforcement

• Request payment using gift cards.

If you receive phone calls, text messages, emails, or other communications that seem suspicious, do not engage with the individual and do not provide any personal or financial information.

Many of these scams originate from outside the United States, making them difficult to trace or prosecute. As a result, the best defense is simply not to engage with the scammer.

If you believe you are being targeted by a scam, report the incident to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov

Anyone who has suffered a financial loss or has additional questions is encouraged to contact the Alliance Police Department at 308-762-4955.
