CRETE, Neb. — The Crete Police Department is warning residents about a man impersonating an officer and attempting to lure people into meeting him under false pretenses.

According to a Facebook post from the department, a male caller has been contacting local residents and identifying himself as “Detective Sergeant Mike Watson.” In at least one instance, he asked a woman to meet in person to provide a handwriting sample for an alleged investigation.

Police say the caller is not affiliated with any law enforcement agency and is believed to be impersonating a peace officer — a crime under Nebraska law. Authorities are especially concerned about the potential safety risk, as the suspect appears to be targeting women and trying to get them to meet alone.

The department is urging anyone who receives a call like this to hang up and immediately report it to Crete Police at 402-826-4311. Officials stressed that no legitimate officer would make such a request over the phone.

"Do not agree to meet this person," the department said in the post. "Your safety is our priority."

Police are continuing to investigate and are asking the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
